'83 merc L/U

can anyone tell me what lower units are interchangealbe with a '83 70hp merc 3 cly engine 20" shaft lower unit...(yr, hp, etc.) thanks for all info..

That was a rather specific gearcase only used on those triples 50Hp to 70Hp built from the late 70s to mid 80s. The ones on the smaller Hp 4-cylinder and twin models look the same, but the bolt patterns are slightly different.

WillyBWright..are you saying gear cases from 50hp-70hp..late 70s to mid 80s Merc will interchange with a '83 Merc lower unit, without alternation of any kind?? thanks for the info..

As long as the 50 is a 3-cylinder. I've only ever seen one of those. Otherwise you'll see mostly 650 triples and 70 triples. Don't confuse the 650 triples with the 650 4-cylinders or the 50 triples with the 50 4-cylinders. Only the triples will fit other triples. The gear ratios might be slightly different (I doubt it), but that can easily be compensated with a slightly different pitched prop.
