Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

between 1970 and 1988, there should be a serial number stamped in the top of the block or in a soft plug

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

that may not be possible, but the location of the voltage rectifier, and the port mounted fuel pump may tip some one that knows Mercs better than I.
Another tip maybe any #'s on the carb flanges.... maybe WWVxx or so.Also look for #'s etched by hand or stamped by hand (could be serial #)

DHP

There are a lot of clues in those pictures. It has ADI ignition and blue coils. That should put it somewhere from the late 70s thru the 80s. The throttle advance looks like those on 90s and 115s, but I don't think the 90s had spark advance. The carbs are 80s era and the fuel pump is early 80s. I'm going to say a 1984ish 115.

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

Thanks Willy, I bought it over ebay cause im having troubles with my inline. Is it possible that it may be more than 115? Mine is a 1972 1150 but i recon i'll be able to make one good one out of the parts. Just not sure which one to keep...

Compare the throats of the carbs. More than 115's will have larger throated carbs. There are other differences, but that's the easy one to spot.

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

hello
the transfer port covers may help as well. the big triangle ones are mostly late 80"s. and were used on the 140 and 150. some may have been used on the ninties. the lack of a fuelprimer should date it before 85 or so but the adi should date it after 1980 or so.
I have not messed much with inline mercs in the past 10 years as in my area they all corroded away.
maybe Clams Canino will pop on and have a look.

All the ADI motors present the same visually. The orange flywheel means it's an earlier ADI model. It could be a 90, 115, or 140. Whe WMK numbers on the carbs will help narrow it down.

-W

Im happy if its a 115, that powerhead has low compression on 2 cylinders so I dont know if i should just get a couple of pistons for it... or use parts from it to fix mine. Mind you with it being an 80's model will parts be compatible with my 1972???

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

You need to take the ADi motor apart and see what it is on the inside. The block will not bolt on to a 1972 115 (assuming a silver powerhead '72) leg assembly.

You could use crank and reed blocks if they are better. the '72 115 had restricted reeds.

-W

Why will it not bolt on Wayne and what does ADi mean?

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

Those used a few ignition systems. There was a fairly conventional distribtror ignition model at first followed by an amplified electronic ignition distributor. Both of those drove off the battery. The ADI system produces it's own electricity for spark and processes it electronically to each coil rather than distributing it via a rotor. All three systems produce one heckuva whollop sparkwise. I suppose ADI is the more reliable, but ADI has a bit of a reputation for failures. ADI = Alternator Driven Ignition. The blocks changed from the distributor era to the ADI era and I expect that's why they won't bolt up to the same leg.

Re: Guess the horsepower!!!

Gutted, I won this item on ebay and the guy apologised saying that it had been sold. I thought there was a buyer/seller contract or something.... Anyway the price was 115 + delivery... He then offered me a model with a distributer and 2 cylinders low comp for £250!!! He says that this is a reasonable compromise, I think not... An older engine with 2 cyl down for double the money??? He said, that if I leave him negative feedback he will do it straight back....This is an actual company!!! The guy said I was being miserable for wanting a powerhead at that price!!!!

File a complaint with ebay.....seller non-compliance. Works quite well. He can't pull it from ya if the auction went full term. They will suspend him, no doubt.
