I have put a new gasket on it(that I ordered right here off iboats), and that didnt work, so I put 2 gaskets on it. It worked better with 2, but it still leaks around the top plug hole. I have even replace the cover itself. Still it refuses to seal. What to do, what to do.

75 model 65hp Merc 3cyl.

Nate Permatex makes lots of products, but I think it is Permatex #2 that you need.It is thick and non-hardening.

I've used it on this exact problem with great results.

Chances are the 'dome'around the plug has a slight groove in it,causing your leak.

DHP

nate
if the jug end has much corrosion try this trick.
use a dremel tool and a tapered bit, rough up the surface around the gasket area and remove all the loose stuff. mix up some jb weld and apply liberally. let it dry overnight and use a 10" meduim file to surface it so its built up to the block sides level
sometimes it will take two tries. I fixed many of them that way. also check the cover for warpage with a striaght edge.
the trick is to make the jug surface level with the block surface again

Black permatex silicone works well too, if not TOO much corrosion.

-W

You can also use a press with the plate off and spring the plate to have more preload (use care with this method)
