I just purchased a 1994 25 hp Mariner s/n 0G032020. Is it exactly the same as a Mercury?
Can I use a Mercury manual for reference?
Thanks

Yes you can the parts are the same.At one point Mariners were different (read Imported).Try to get parts for those. But later Mariners were similar, and since 1998,identical.

DHP

My motor says made in U.S. Are you saying the U.S. motors are the same but the imported are differant? When you say "read imported" I can't find that post. Thanks

Sorry to mislead you over the 'read imported' thing.I just meant early Mariners were imported and very different from Mercs.

DHP

Mariners of the 1980s were Yamahas up to 40 Hp.

Brunswick can sell Merc and mariners across the street from each other, The just want you to buy either. I guess this idea ran out of steam after Brunswick cans Mariner in the US

I was checking the value of my Merc 1994 4 cylinder onn the NADA guides site yesterday & then clicked on the Mariners to see what they were valued @ & the same motor was on average 120 bucks cheaper with the Mariner name.
So the difference seems to be price or resale value

Mariners do have lower resale valve. After all... wouldn't you rather have a Merc?

The truth? After the test firing on the assembly line the stronger motors got painted black and the others were painted gray.

The $120.00 can probably be attributed to the fact that the Mariner name is no longer sold in the US.

That fact would mean nothing to me but it might to some.

It's like the Evenrude Johnson thing, years ago as a youngon I always believed that Evenrudes were slightly better motors but I now believe they're exactly the same but I'm pretty sure the Evenrudes cost slightly more..just a marketing ploy..

Hey Jimmbo, pretty astute post & the ones that dont run @ all get the " Force " sticker on the cover, right ! LOL
