I have a 63 Merc1000. Recently bought on a 1970 19' sabercraft. Am currently rebuilding, previous owner had everything jerry-rigged, now trying to work around it. Rebuilt carbs, fuel pumps, new spark plugs and wires, coils, still need lots more. working on the quicksilver remote control and have some fried wires, extra ones and no idea what connects to what. have the mercury service manual (#90-25500) but not quite enough info. fed up and want to make my own cluster and harness. Can i use the remote control for the throttle control and direction, use new key switch, new button for choke? How would i rig up the rest of the wires to make it work properly?

Re: 1963 Merc1000 electrical

Use the original engine plug in and harness as a connection to the engine with the safety switch for neutral in the box for start up protection in gear, there are two different wiring color codes depending on the shape of your box they are shown in section VII Pages 47 for the earliest box and 49 for the later 1000 and 1100.making it as clear as mud.--bob

His should be the one on 47. As I recall there's only the 2 big battery leads and then B+ for Run, Start, Choke, prolly room in the plug to bring a tach lead up front too.

-W

Re: 1963 Merc1000 electrical

Thanks guys, actually figured out the old wiring and hooked up to my new wires. On the throttle end, i cut off all the connectors or fuses( coming out of the key switch) i'm not sure what they were, but they are gone now, will my throttle wiring harness go up in a ball of flames? thanks

You should have at least 1 fuse at the power lead at the engine, (although there was none then the engine was built) or the answer could be yes. It will only take a couple of minutes to do and could save your bacon
