I have an '85-86 Oil Injected Mecrcury Black Max 175hp on my '85 Ranger 370V. I have some kind of short or switch failure on my trim unit. It runs continualy when the boats main power is on. I have disconnected all three switches individually and have had the same problem. Is there some place that I should start looking? Everything else on the boat seems to be functioning correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DHP, he will have a switch at the front of the boat, at the throttle arm, and at the rear right corner of the boat near the transom...

If you have checked all, you must have a problem in the main wiring harness... Something is worn and shorting it out....Meaning, something is providing power to the motor besides the switches.... Check all the wires carefully

I would suspect all those switches operate a single relay. I would trace back the wiring and see if there isn't a faulty relay sticking on.

I agree with L.I. Chuck, I think you have a relay sticking under the cowl. I actually have had this happen on a 75 HP Evenrude one time.

Oh, and welcome, "Fellow Bass fisherman", there are a number of us here at Iboats. If ya get up here to the southern Oregon coast, Ill give ya a clue as to where to fish on Ten Mile Lakes.

I"m having the same problem on my 75hp Merc on my Ranger right now. How do I test to see if the relay or solenoid is the problem?
