I have just bought this engine and put it on the back of my 10' fiberglass boat. wow, does it ever fly, motor has been recently rebuilt in the past year. What i would like to know is what year it is. If anyone can help me I would be most appreciative. I have a feeling it is a 1979. The s/n is 7002202.
Thanks,

Sean

Re: merc 7.5

My book says it is a pre 1974 as 7028598 was the starting number in 1974 Canadain built engines, but don't go back any older it's probably a 1973--Bob

I get 1972 for that one. At that sort of age (+15 years) condition is the most important thing.

Re: merc 7.5

A few years matter most when there are significant changes in the models. It can make a big difference in cost and avialability of parts. I bought a 1976 Merc 200 on eBay but the seller gave me the wrong serial number and had advertised it as a 1978, which matched the number he gave me. They made several changes in ignition and electric starting in those two years and it has cost me a good bit more to bring this engine up to snuff than it would have if it was a 1978. Still it is a good motor and yes, as long as it runs that is the most important thing. Caveat emptor, and check the serial numbers. Hard to do much when a seller just lies to you, though!
