Can I change the lower unit seal in my 1994 Mercury 8hp outboard, or does it require special tools and a manual? ( I have a little experience working on older motors, all Johnsons.) Serial number is CG020521. There is water in the gear case. Thanks.

Re: Lower Unit Seal

A manual is a good idea you will have to build a socket out of a peice of pipe or get ahold of a wrench to remove the carrier

Re: Lower Unit Seal

Jwolf, Im not familliar with that motor, but definately get a manual. It may be the driveshaft seals on top of the waterpump, and below the waterpump. In that case you would only remove the lower unit and the pump assembly and no special tools will be needed. Seems to me that if you dont have oil dripping out near the prop shaft that it is not that seal and the ones I mentioned above would be the culprit.

Good Luck !
