Motor has been run very little over last couple of years. I let it go 4 months thru winter without cranking it. Will not start. Checked spark- OK. Fuel looked a little dark. Pumped fuel out of tank.Dumped water seperator. Took fuel line off tank, pumped fresh fuel from gas can through squeeze bulb, fuel diaphragm pump, water seperator and out the drain on vapor seperator. Checked diaphragm pump- working good.
Only getting 2 PSI from discharge of electric pump, should be 35-39 PSI. Took fuel pump out of vapor seperator. I hooked it up to a small 12V power supply, did not run until tapped on it. Appeared to have broke loose and OK. Put everything back together and tested and repaired leaks. Tried to start motor no luck. Fuel pump pulses ( clicks ) about every 2-3 seconds from the instant the key is turned. Voltage to pump pulses also. Fuel pump resistance is .9 ohms as book specifies. Is there anything that could cause a voltage problem to the pump. I want to be certain it is the fuel pump before I spend $675 for a new one. Any thoughts on my problem.
Thanks in advance.

I cannot access it right now,but there is a service bulletin on this, and it tells how to free up the pump if stale fuel is the problem.Maybe talk to your local dealer.

SOB-02-20 is the one I am speaking of.

DHP

hello
if the pumpis just stuck soak it in combustion chamber cleaneror power tune or seafoam or anyother decarb for 2 strokes. you can use jumper wires and momentarily run it backards a bit. the pump should only run about 5 seconds when the key is turned on and not cranked. try tobreak itfree with a good soaking cause theygeta bit pricy. some aftermarket ones are avalible. are you sure this is a 200 ? most 150,175 and 200 mercs had an externally mounted pump. but sometimes the engineers fail to tell us everything :) . every now and again we get something we are not used to seeing

Man I just went through all that. I ended up "Uncrimping the ends", sliding it apart, cleaning it up, slide it back together, recrimp it, and your good to go. I know....... All of us are sitting back waiting to see how many hours until she quits working....but she has been humming great for about 75 hrs. The only reason I took on the challenge is because the engine had less that 10 hours on it.... It had been sitting. There also several Merc service bulletins detailing how to soak the pumps in cleaner. I soaked my for days and I still had to take it apart to get out the turpentine balls. They were like little orange balls of birdshot. Anyway, to a search on the subject.......

Well, I've had the pump soaking for 3 days now in Seafoam. The pump will turn when power is applied to it but it pumps no fluid with or without the screen on the bottom. It is 3/4 submerged in seafoam when testing. I don't know if it needs a minimum amount of suction pressure? I am interested in taking it apart. Bushcat, How did you uncrimp the ends and then crimp them back.

Thanks for the replies, I'm not giving up yet. Bran

After sitting it on the bench for a week and looking at each night, thinking of how many beers that pump would cost..... I decided that IF I was going to pay, I was going to learn from this deal. I went to the pliers drawer, and pull out these little channel locks I have, grabbed onto the factory crimped edge, and pryed open. Repeat about 50 times all the way around the end. The plastic endcap will slide out with its O-ring intact. Repeat for the other end. Clean her up and reverse process. It went really well except for the REcrimped ends looks a little shadetree but the endcaps/o-rings look/seal great. Now we will see how many hours it will last before I open a "Fuel pump rebuilding shop".

Re: 1996 200 EFI electric fuel pump bad ??

After soaking in Seafoam for 11 days, changing fluid, blowing out with an air compressor and a little abuse my pump started working. Put everything back together on my " 96 Mercury 200 EFI" and she started on the first crank. I was almost at the point of destructive learning that Bushcat eluded to. Thanks to all who replied.

Bran
