my fill cap is stuck. its #31 on the pic. any ideas how to get it off without removing the entire system(which i may just need to do, is it hard?)

its recessed a lil bit into the main part of the motor, so i cant get a good grip with a wrench, socket or pliers. and the fact that it is plastic sucks cause even the screwhead for a screwdriver is stripped out.

its a 1990 merc 90hp, the big 3 cylinder.
any ideas?

I'd recut the screw slot. Grind down a screwdriver to a chisel point (sideways) then scrape, scrape, scrape till you have a deep slot. Then use a wide screwdriver (at least as wide at the whole head) to turn it out. Soaking the cap in wd-40 overnight wouldn't hurt either.

snap on makes a liquid that has very small bits of stuff in it i would think someone else would make it as well . you put a drop on head of the screw and a drop on screw driver when you turn it it acts like grip tape between the 2. works very well on rusted stuff might work for you, after doing what seahorse said. good luck

Are you sure you can't get at it with a 3/4 six point socket, extension and ratchet?

DHP

dhp, because the screwhead is plastic, its been extremely rounded off by various previous owners.

i have tried large screwdrivers, and other various wide flat metal things to no avail. it just stripps it even more.

Mike, I have heated a older screwdriver with a wide blade very hot and melted a deep slot in the caps before to get a good purchase on them---Bob
