I just bought a repair kit for a Merc 4hp
sn OD973723 , 2 stroke. Is installing a repair kit something to take to a shop, or can I do it myself?
Also, how can I tell the year of manufacture of this particular engine?

Re: Merc outboard 4hp carb repair kit

I had never done this myself until this weekend. I just removed, took apart, cleaned, re-assembled and re-installed the carb on my old 9.8 hp. The motor started up and ran fine afterwards! (reserving judgement on the amount of difference it made - probably some, but not a "night and day" difference for the idle, which is what I was trying to improve)

I have a factory manual and the step by step instructions were pretty good. What they didn't explicitedly spell out, I was able to figure out. I also have the Seloc manual for this engine, and the carb. section had identical photos to the factory manual - so I think either would be good.

I don't know if you could do the job without a manual, depends on your experience and memory.

I'd give it a try. My guess would be that if you don't lose or break any parts (BE CAREFUL!), a shop could put it back together for you if you couldn't, but I'll bet you can.

where can I get those manuals?. Of course, the cheapest place! Any chance of getting a copy of that particular section of the manual?

You can get the Seloc manual at most boat shops that sell your brand of motor. I think they might be available through this site also (iboats.com)as well as on-line book stores. Libraries are another good place to look. The factory manual, I bought, I think, from www.maxrules.com (look under parts for merc). You can buy the service manual as well as the original owner's manual if you want that too. You need the service manual for mechanical work. The bad news is the Seloc manual is pretty expensive, and the "factory" manual can be even more so ($50 - $75).
