Recently while using my Mercury 75 at low revs the overheating sounder started, due to being in a dangerous place I had to keep the engine running for about five minutes then I was able to clear the obstruction (weeds). The pee hole was working all the time . Is this likely to cause any damage as the motor seem to be running fine now?

Perhaps the water intake was temporarily blocked due to the obstructions which you've described, inspect the water pump and the water passages for debris

By running the engin, and the pee hole was working, you may have help cool down the engine with the water pump. Do you have a water pressure gage? This inexpensive gage will help by giving you what you need to know with out looking back at the motor. Also by monitoring the gage you will know when your water pump is getting weak, and will to be changed. It takes a lot of the guess work out for you. <br /> Back to what might of caused the over temp alarm. You said you where in weeds, your motor may have picked up a small amount of the grass into your water pump and in to your water jacket, temperarly blocking the water flow. It doesn't take long to overheat an engine. By the time you noticed the pee hole working it might have pass the weed.

Thanks guys basically I wanted to know if running the motor in an overheated state for around five minutes would cause much damage.
