The trigger is a molded part of the distributor body. Most people just get a used distributor.

Try an ebay search on: Mercury outboard distributor

There's usually a couple up there.

BUT - you still gottta do the switchbox test 1st and check / recheck all the wire connections / also check the white wire on the switchbox for +12 DURING the failure. Trigger is last resort after EVERYTHING else is eliminated.

-W

I know for a fact there is at least one (inline 6) distributor up there right now. Try the search again.

But hear my words that you are jumping to conclusions. Until you do the switchbox test and check the wiring and connections / wire nuts with a fine tooth comb, your distributor is not convicted. Triggers usually die, it's rare to see an *intermittant* trigger.

Also - drop the distibutor cap and check the carbon brush in the center, if that failed (a $4 part) it can cause an intermittiant no spark condition.

Make sure the battery is fully charged too.

-W

Only be default. When you do the switchbox test, you eliminate the switchbox / coil / ignition switch and wireing as past of that test.

Do the swichbox test DURING a failure.

This leaves only the trigger suspect.

-W

Well it ran fine about 15 min. Then rpm's started to drop lower then lower. Now all I can get is 2000-2500 out of it. I have to trim up to get that? I think it in the fuel somewhere? It does no good to pump bulb, It floods it. It is back in my shop now. I will see if I can find the problem. Oh yea it is drinking gas like crazy. Anybody got any idea what it could be.

Tim,

Do a search for Clams Canino using the search function where I think he lists his email. You can also find him on Ebay. He's just down the road from you in Fair Play,SC and is the local Merc guru. He helped me get my '75 1500 back in the game with a vengeance and will get you going with advice or an exhaustive inventory of used parts if you need them. Good luck!

Hello...I do believe i have a 1975 Mercury 1500...I was running the Serial Number this evening. Do you think you could post a pic of yours so i can see is mine is the same? My motor is on a 1983 Malibu Skier (strange I know)

Thanks,

Rob
