I just ordered a pair. They are supposed to be part goggle part sunglasses with a gasket surface between the glasses and the face. Has anyone used these for boating? I hear they're becoming popular with motorcyclists. If you have used a pair what do you think? Do they fog up? Do they keep the wind out? Any other opinions on the glasses? I'm hoping the pair I bought isn't a waste of money as I'm planning to use them in an open center console boat.

These glasses are what our troops are using in Iraq also. They're supposed to keep the dust away from their eyes as well as being bullet proof.

Just like the Hummers parked at the country club vs. the Hummer being used to get around in Iraq; the Wiley X "Protective Eyewear" which the US Army has contracted to issue IS NOT the same sunwear Wiley X is selling in the consumer marketplace.

Although their sunwear consumers often construe the Wiley X lenses as being "bullet proof" their polycarbonate lenses are "impact resistant" and "shatterproof" Many premium sunwear manufacturers offer polycarbonate lenses as a less expensive option because there are indeed other materials which afford better optics.

Suspension mold polarized lenses require additional thickness to facilitate sandwiching the polarized filter between the front and back surface. As industrial safety lenses are required to have a 2.5 mm min. thikness per ANSI standards, some manufacturers take the liberty of qualifying their sunwear as "safety" grade.

I also know the Wiley lenses are not available in many lens color options. While other premium competing lines have a dozen or better combinations of lens material and color options, Wiley X is usually limited to grey or brown.

You know your prevailing sunwear demands best and if they meet your expectations....They're worth every penny you paid for them.

Well actually I wasn't looking for bullet proof. Heck I hope nobody wants to shoot me in the face.

Rather I am intrigued by the goggle or wind blocking capability while at sea. I know I could simply wear a pair of ski goggles but was hoping for something more portable and stylish. Regardless, what I've read on the website seems to imply that they are the same glasses as used in the military. I think it would be more expensive for them to make two different models civilian vs. military editions.

I understand that there are limited lens options. That was a bit of a nag but I found what I needed.

Given the militaries thumbs up and the significantly lower price than Oaklies I was impresses. I went to the glass place and tried many frames out. They all look and feel to be just as good as teh Oaklies except the Wiley X's have a modular gasket system instead.

Personally, I'll let everyone pay the extra $$$ for the Oakley ad campaigns. I just hope the Wiley X's goggle claim lives up. As sunglasses they look quite cool.

Talk about expensive marketing....Do you think NASCAR and Joe Nimechack's owner is letting Wiley X toot their horn with a big advertisement every Sunday afternoon for Free?

The government issue Wiley X's are indeed different since they don't want to be accused of endorsing (free advertising) a product outside it's normal parameters of use. Regardless of the pictures on the Wiley X website, the real pictures of soldiers in Iraq will not have the Wiley X name conspicously printed on them. Even though uncle sam is probably paying less than half of what you paid, it is still profitable enough for them to jump through hoops to design a "military issue model."
