Howdy! I tested the compression on each cylinder and here are the results:

1 - 130
2 - 135
3 - 135
4 - 135
5 - 131
6 - 130

I'm guessing this is good :D since they're all within range (15%)? Any advice would be great. My engine specs are in my signature.

If these are acceptable, then I'll continue on with getting a new lower unit. And if they are acceptable - how SWEET - this engine is ancient and I think it's gonna run like a CHAMP!! I CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT IN THE WATER!!!

THANKS AHEAD OF TIME!

Re: Compression Test Results

That compression is very good, however that is only a partial test of the powerhead.
I would start the engine and see if it runs okay as well. ie:- this will give you and idea about the ignition, charging system, and the starting system. If the lower unit is off, you can accomplish this by putting the hose on the water pump tube going up to the power head. If that goes well, then you are in pretty good shape.

Re: Compression Test Results

Thanks, Laddies and CoolMaker!

I have started it and it seems to run OK. Of course I ran it under a minute (didn't attach a hose to the water pump tube, but it started right up and sounds good!

I know that the battery does not charge (step-dad told me)...so I'm going to troubleshoot that next. I'm hoping it's just the rectifier. I was planning on cleaning all of the connections to and from it (very dirty), then test the charge on the battery while the engine is running and go from there.

Re: Compression Test Results

If you ran the motor, even for under a minute, without a water source chances are you have ruined the pump impeller. They don't like to be run dry for any length of time at all.

Yep even 5 seconds with no water in the pump housing will rip all the vanes off your impeller. :(

Re: Compression Test Results

he has no lowerunit on the motor. re-read first post.

everything is fine with that compression.

you need a new rectifier. go to radioshack, yes, radio shack, and get a "25 amp full wave bridge rectifer", they cost about 2 dollars and last longer than OEM and also charge faster than OEM, plus they only cost about 2 bucks, instead of 40 !!!

buy a couple of em, i always cary a spare

peace

mike

Thats a really nice looking boat & motor. Too bad it was left outside neglected. I'm sure you will be able to return it to a useable condition. Looks like it coudl be lots of fun!

Your compression numbers are great.

Re: Compression Test Results

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I don't have a lower unit attached to it at the moment (need a new one). I'll pick up a new rectifier next!

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET HER IN THE WATER!!
