Re: IL6 Question

Hi Stan,

Good to see you back.

Define 'crankcase cover'. Are you talking about the cover that the spark plugs are inserted through, or the cover that the carbs bolt on to?

If you're talking about the cover on the front of the engine (carbs bolt onto) then 'No', you can't interchange them (theoretically), I have seen it done though.

If it's the water cover on the combustions chambers, then you could use a cover from an engine up to 1972, but the part changed after that.

Chris.........

Re: IL6 Question

you are not SUPPOSED to, since the crankcase cover and the main block are machined as a matching set.

its been done. carefully.

ive done it on other motors, my last was a 1980 merc 40hp.

sometimes on the mercs, the dowl pins wouldnt match up, and ive seen and heard from people who would just remove these dowl pins and line it up manualy. it takes a great sense of esteem in your work to do this, especially in a big bloke like a inline 6 !

im not saying you can and im not saying you cant. this is just my lil bit worth.

mike

peace

Re: IL6 Question

My take too.

Fit them up with the innards out and feel the inside of the line bore for the crank. If it's not a perfect match, then you'll have to remove the dowel pins and let the reed/bearing blocks line it up for you.

It wasn't a reccomended procedure, but here in 2005 you gotta do what you gotta do to keep them running.

-W

Re: IL6 Question

I agree with that clams. I could have the crankcase alloy welded I suppose but the starter motor mount is broken from it also. I recon it was dropped at some point.

I'll check for a perfect match, if not the dowels are coming out and im going in!

Cheers

Stan

Re: IL6 Question

Ok, i've fitted the "good condition" crankcase cover and it seems to be a very close fit...

The bottom end of the powerhead is a perfect match but the top end is maybe 1/20 of a milimetre out creating a miniscule lip, hard to feel but non the less there. Is this a negligable difference or should i remove the dowel pin from the top end to try for a better fit?
