I have mercury 60 3-cyc approx year 1985-90

The problem is that it is difficult to start. I checked spark on plugs while trying ignition and spark is not constant.
When it does start it then works fine except on idle. If put on idle engine will stop.

Any ideas?

Hi.

I checked trigger voltage wire to wire from black to brown, white and purple and only got 0.4V (BAD as should be 4V). Checked resistance and found these to be about 1100ohms again wire to wire (OK as should be 800-1400).
Both tests were made with everything still in place.

What does this indicate?

My specs for the trigger: Brown to White/Black R x 100 = 11-14 ohm, White to White/Black R x 100 = 11-14 ohm, Violet to White/Black R x 100 = 11-14 ohm. Problem actually sounds like the timing is a tad off. Timing should be set at .464". Remove top plug, bring to top piston to TDC, insert dial indicator and set to 0", rotate flywheel CCW past .464 and then CW to .464. Set timing pointer at flywheel to .464 mark.

Is it possible to loose timing adjustment if there has been no repair work done on engine?

Yes you can loose timing adjustment. Facing the stern on the starboard side of the motor is the idle and throttle adjustments. This is where the cables from your control come in. Right above the throttle adjustment is the timing adjustment. If any of the jam nuts have come loose, your idle or timing will be off. I discovered a loose nut when I was having issues starting the motor at slow idle, although it would fire right up with the fast idle lever in the engaged position.

If you are getting consistent spark, then try to start the motor at idle with the butterfly valve slightly open. You can do this by removing the cover for the carbs and gently opening the butterfly valves with a screw driver.

If it fires up on slow idle then you will want to adjust you slow idle stop. Loosen jam nut and turn bolt 1 turn CW or CCW (depending on motor year). You can figure out which way to turn stop bolt by looking at position on linkage at idle, then engage to WOT, observe change in linkage. It will either be pulling or pushing linkage to get to WOT. Turn bolt accordingly once throttle is set to neutral.

I had a 1976 Chevy Vega with a stubborn, below 32 deg., carb. Confused about carb settings and idle problems I talked to my Dad about my experiences with it and I applied it to my 1987 60 HP Mercury. Local marine mechanic, said I did it right. I obliged his input by purchasing parts from him.

Get the book "Boating Magazine's Outboard Engines - maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair". Great resource. Lots of tips, techniques, pictures, etc. If you have a basic understanding of motors, can search info on the web, you probably will be able to troubleshoot and fix your motor, in most instances.
