Mercury oil tanks

No major problems at this time, but I do have a question that I would like to pose to the audience for comment. I have a pair of 1992 Merc 175s and I use the original oil injection. Over the years I have noticed that the outside of the onboard ( remote ) oil tanks are always oily, on both tanks. Each year I clean the outside of the tanks with a good soap or degreaser but shortly afterwards they feel oily again. Is the plastic that these tanks are made of slightly porous such that oil seeps through ever so slightly ? Is there a better cleaner to use on them ? Anybodyelse notice this annoying condition ? I have to remove the tanks from their compartment to fill them, but I am very cautious not to spill oil on them or I wipe them down before putting them back.

Re: Mercury oil tanks

Capt, seems to be the nature of some of them, but not all I seen on maybe 10% of the units I service. I think most people mark it off to spillage--Bob

I have seen the sealing rings on the quick disconnect weep under pressure ..<br />try cleaning them before you snap it back on ..
