Hope you made it to the lake. Not necessary to take/send pictures as I have found the tell tale and it is now free from obstruction. I must say it more like weeping than peeing. For all the latest check out: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=017554
There is really not much new but there may be a comment or two that sparks some new insight. The weekend will be occupied with dance recital and, do I dare speak of it - worship service presented by the youth group.

Re: Tell Tale Personal to gwmark78

Techno, I did head to the lake friday, ( it's in Montana) but I had some trouble with my motor in starting so would not have been able to take a pic. I've got a backfiring issue in starting which has got me scratching-got to do some studying and post a thread I guess. I'm glad You found that illusive tell tale. When you get your waterpump fixed, it will shoot out a good stream.

Well, so far this one has me stupified and mystifed. It is an intermittent problem and I am still trying to 'reason' this thing out and at least narrow down the cause. I have checked all the obvious and textbook trouble shooting. Something simple I believe, but hard nail down.

In Television, there is an axiom. You can't fix an intermittant. The only sure way is to apply the shotgun approach. That is start changing things until the problem goes away, also known as throwing money at it. The one good thing about it in this situation you will always have the labor fee.

I will be interested to here what you finally come up with on your backfiring problem. Hey Baylor gives creedence to the shotgun approach, yup, that was it. Usually it is - well, that ain't it. ;)

Put a voltmeter on the system and see that it's not overcharging. that can cause the ignition to "break down" and cause "backfiring" symptoms. Only happens after boat is warmed up and the power used by the starter from the battery is re-charged.

-W

Hello Clams,
So,if the motor is backfiring on startup (just backfires-wiil not start) the overcharging would not apply here-correct? See my post of 6/21 on backfiring? Thanks

Yes, it should be out there. It is just a matter of finding it. My youngest "hired hand" has the "knack" and often times sees things that escape me. He also spends my money quite freely and pockets the commision. But in the final analysis it is the resolution that counts. Or, as a wiseman once said, "I would rather be lucky than good anyday."

Re: Tell Tale Personal to gwmark78

Read you thread on backfiring again. It is getting a bit long so I dug up this one. It is even longer than yours. Some VOM'd no have some form of capacitance checks. Not sure if it would be beneficial in this case. A tune up used to iclude new points and condensor as the cost was less than taking a chance the condensor would fail and bring back an irate customer. Time has shown that good condensors where being trashed. Hence, a new philosophy. With the advent of solid state ignition many things have changed. Maybe you should change the condesor, but don't throw the old one away..... ;) If you are following my saga you may know that one of the best sources of help is on a dialup as I am and avoids long threads where possible.

Re: Tell Tale Personal to gwmark78

When I changed points about year ago I did not change condensers, but I bought a whole new set of points/ condensers on e bay dirt cheap a while back, so at least I've got the parts to try. Hopefully, I'll be posting after the fourth and telling you what the problem was and now the motor runs great!
