This motor was rebuilt 1.5 years ago with new switch boxes, stater, plugs, wires, changed one coil and all three carbs rebuilt. Until a week ago it ran great, then I bought a new boat and was selling this one and on a test run with the buyer it developed a miss. It dosen't do all the time but you can tell it when it does. It still runs super but that little miss keep the buyer from taking it. I took all three carbs apart and cleaned them, changed the plugs, drained the tank (thought it might be water),checked all the wires for loose connections and checked the gas line. Guess what it still misses! I took it to a tech. and he said it sounds like electrical and to change the stater then the switch boxes one at a time. I ask if he could check them and he said there's no way to do that? Does anyone have any ideas and is the tech. right? Thanks for your time and response! Stan

Hey Canepole,
I have a Clymer Mercury manual for 45-225 HP from
1972-1989. Manual is OK but not great. You can Ohms test the stator, trigger, and coils. This might help some. I found a bad trigger on my 1985 Merc 150 with Ohms test. For more extensive tests you will probably need a Direct Voltage Adapter. Your best bet would be to buy a Merc manual for your engine, available from Iboats. If you don't want to buy a manual, I'll post those Ohms numbers for you. Maybe somebody with an engine like yours will chime in.

Thanks dakk1. I would appriciate it if you could post the specs, I hate to buy a manual for this thing since it's for sell. I've always heard the best two days for a boat owner is the day he buys it and the day he sells it! Thanks again!

Hi Canepole,

If you've never done this before, look over those online manuals for the precautions and procedures.

Per the Clymer manual:

Stator:
Betweem blue and red stator leads: 5400-6200 ohms
Between blue/white and red/white: 5400-6200 ohms
Between red stator lead and ground: 125-175 ohms
Between red/white lead and ground: 125-175 ohms

Trigger:
Between brown(without yellow sleeve) and white(with yellow sleeve): 1100-1400 ohms.
Between white(without yellow sleeve) and violet(with yellow sleeve): 1100-1400 ohms.
Between the violet(without yellow sleeve) and brown(with yellow sleeve) 1100-1400 ohms.

Coils:
Between coil neg and pos terminals: .02-.04 ohms

If orange colored coils:
Between coil tower and engine ground: 800-1100 ohms.

If blue colored coils:
Between coil tower and either pos or neg coil terminal: 800-1100 ohms.

I have the Merc manual for my 1985 Merc 150 and the specs are the same. As I said, when I tested my trigger, that middle test, as outlined above, gave me a reading of 8000 ohms!

I hear ya about the 2 best days. LOL. I always say, if things are going smoothly in your life, buy an outboard motor. LOL. Hope this helps.
