Inline shifting questions

Just two things left on my list before I can fire this b**ch up. :)

Right now I'm trying to get the shift shaft hooked up, and to do so I need to get the lower unit on my '74 inline 6 shifted into neutral. Two questions:

1. Can somebody confirm that if the prop turns (and clicks) clockwise, and won't turn counter clockwise, it's in forward?

2. If I want to shift from forward, to neutral without the use of the
shifter, I need to turn the shift shaft counter clockwise? (and someone
needs to spin the prop at the same time to prevent damage?)

Re: Inline shifting questions

Zmoz, On that lower unit, if the prop shaft turns clockwise with a ratcheting sound(and not CCW), you are in forward. If it wont turn more than 1/8 in either direction , you are in reverse. In neutral, it turns freely in both directions without a sound.

Also, there are basically two neutrals. You need to be in the correct one, before reinstalling the lower unit, or the motor shift will be reversed. I would set the control box to neutral, have someone shift it into forward for you, and observe which way it turns. Now turn the LU shift shaft the same way, and assure it clicks into forward.

Re: Inline shifting questions

Alright, I have the lower unit off right now to get the shaft aligned. Still can't get it into neutral.

The shift shaft will only turn approximately 1/2 turn. Is it supposed to turn more than that?

When turned as far as it will go counter clockwise, the prop will turn and click in either direction.

When turned as far as it will go clockwise, it appears to be in forward.

Where the hell is neutral?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Re: Inline shifting questions

Zmoz, That shiftshaft on thatlower unit should "click" into neutral and stay there. If it doesn't do that, you may have a gearcase problem.

Alright, I think I have it figured out now, but is it supposed to click when I turn the prop in either direction when in neutral? That's what mine is doing...I was under the impression that it should spin freely in either direction.

ZmOz, When the gearcase is in neutral, it should not click.

The gearcase should also stay in neutral on it own, once you place it in neutral. Actually it will stay in whatever gear you put it into, unlike Mercruiser gearcases.

Re: Inline shifting questions

#1, do you have oil in the gearcase? The oil will tend to 'cushion' things and most of these little 'tics' will go away.

The other thing is, sometimes the neutral position has to be slightly 'adjusted' from how the shift cam centers itself, in order to get rid of any annoying 'dragging' or 'tics'.

I wouldn't get too hung up on a little 'tic', as long as the lower unit is shifting properly into reverse and forward gear.

You have obviously found the true neutral position, and it's time to slap that baby on, get the cables hooked up, and adjusted.

I bet that when you adjust your shift cable such that there's a very slight preload on the cable, into the Neutral position, that the 'tic' goes away.

Bottom line is, it's either not a problem or the problem will present itself the very first time you shift it in the water. Either way you'll never know unless you get on with it.

IMHO, HTH............ed
