last year I rehabed an old steel boat with this engine hadnt been run for three years. number three cyl. is low comp. I had the electrical panels? replaced along with plugs and carbs rebuilt and new fuel pump. It starts good and idles fine but under way it has no power and surges for about 1/4 second it will start at 9.5mph and ratchet up to as much as 14mph. then back down to 9.5mph. last week I had it out and out of nowhere it it went from 9-25!!!!! but only for about 15 seconds then back to 9.5mph. HELP I WANT TO GO 25 AGAIN! fuel tanks and hoses are all new.

electrics are my weak point, so Id start at the fuel. is the tank vented properly? try removing the tank fitting and putting the end of the fuel line directly in the tank. Try pumping the bulb (assuming you have a good bulb) when it surges and see if it steadys out.

Maybe trigger/timing could cause those symptoms, but Im not 100% sure.

Grrrrrrrr...floats...carb floats could be sticking as well, a carb rebuild kit would solve that.

You never said anything about the coils, stater, trigger, reeds or rectfier. Also check your wires to see if they might be corroded, just skin one a little and see if it's green. If you have low compression you could have a bad ring. You'll find these Babbies are a pain in the rear.

Hi,

I'm certainly not a seasoned mechanic, but I'd add that if it produced power once...it can do it again...and that I'd doubt that your problem is poor compression due to a bad ring or anything serious like that.

I guess I'm looking at the bright side.

I had a problem like you are describing once on an old Scott Atwater, and it turned out to be an issue with the mechanical spark advance not functioning properly.

It sure sounds to me like it's ignition related.

Good Luck, let us know!

Chuck

How low is compression in #3?? Did you try a can of decarb to unstick rings yet?

If #3 is real low - running it that way *will* kill it for good.

-W

Hey thanks guys

alittle more info. I already rebuilt the carbs and the fuel pump. the tanks bulb and line are all new. the electric panel? things are new.

I disconnected the idle stablizer and that didnt help either.

I had her out again this weekend and she did the samething. I trolled for 1 1/2hr then went to run in and she took off but only for about one minute.
then back to 9.5 mph.
what about a governor? rectifier, trigger coil?
man I dont know.

Ignoring the advice in my post will forever lead your motor down the path to the Dark Side.

-W
