Re: mercury 50 not running right

The folks here are very helpful, but they will need more info before they can help.

- What year is the engine?
- What size/type of boat?
- Since you have owned it, when did it last run well?

Engines need fuel, air and spark to run.
- Do you know if you are getting spark to each of the cylinders?
- What is the condition of the carbs?

If you plan on working on it yourself, do yourself a favor and order a service manual for your engine. It will be very helpful.

Re: mercury 50 not running right

Hi there guys, I've never run the boat in water since I bought it. I've put new petrol tank, new fuel line, new filters and a new gasket on the top carb. The engine runs and revs well on the idle lever but as soon as I engage gear and try setting off, my motor dies. Then it only starts using easy start. It's a early eighties (80's) mecury 50.4 cylinder. I've checked rev and gear cables and they are fine. I have noticed some bubbles in the filter. Any help much appreciated.

how old is the motor and when was the last time anyone had it on the water?
i feel the carbs could be your problem. the engine doesn't need much fuel to rev up in neutral but when in gear it a whole different ball game. if it's been a while since the motor was running properly i'd look at the carbs. you may be able to take them off and give them a good cleaning and be ok.
ck your plugs also. it may be time for new ones.
