Guys, probably a stupid question, but my 1983 V-150 has been smoking really badly (blue smoke)for years now. Its pretty embarrassing (and nauseating) to be around anybody. I had it tuned up, and it still does it. I only put in 50:1 mix of oil.
Could it just be that the carbs are set too rich?
Thank you.
George

Welcome to iboats. :)

That's an oil injected motor. And you're using premix besides? I think we found your problem.

Barring that, brand of oil used frequently corresponds to smoke produced. Some smoke worse than others.

Thanks for the reply. No, I believe oil injection came out about a year or two after the 1983 models. My motor just has the oil mixed with the gas.

If it is running fine ..other than smoking, it might be your fuel reciculation system. It could be plugged up...either a filter or check valve could be pluged.if the system is not working right...fuel and oil puddle in side the motor...it causes excessive smoking...maybe a rough idle and hesitaion on take-off.

I've got the same motor and have come to the conclusion, thats just they way they are. I've tried everything. It does clear up some after bein ran for a while. I'm in the process of my last attempt to help it. I'm in the process of replacing the reed. So far they haven't looked that bad but the blocks are no where near flat. So its taking a lot of lapping in to get them right. If that doesn't help - let it smoke! BTW, I tried synthetic oil too and it didn't help.

Isnt that amazing how "Unflat" the cages are. I recently did the same thing and couldnt believe it. I used wet 400 grit and lots of wd-40 on a 1/4" piece of glass. Then dressed them a bit on 600 before assembly.

Lubedude, looks like its going to take a lot of 400 grit paper just to get them close. I'm also using 600 fo finish. Fortunately a friend of mine is a machinist at a local ship yard and got me some isopropanol for a final check. They WILL be flat when I'm done. Thanks for all your help!

You mean they have to be flat? Damn. Didn't know I was suppose to check that when I had my motor apart. reeds looked great but but who knew about the blocks? Could be my problem too.
