I have a freind with a 1997 225 Mariner. He telephoned me asking for my help, knowing that I had an outboard as well.
He said that his oil alarm was alerting him that there was a problem. He topped off the resovoir, but the alarm continued. I told him that my Yamaha has a smaller resovoir located on the engine itself and that if his was similiar he would need to remove the engine cowl and investigate. He said that he couldn't figure out how to remove the cowl. The front would loosen up, but the rear wouldn't move. He then went on to say that the engine would not take any throttle. It would only idle. I told him that this sounded like some sort of "limp home " mode. It would allow him to idle only without any oil. If anyone had any ideas to pass on to him that would be fantastic.( including the engine cowl removal) Thank you.

Re: '97 225 Mariner Engine cowl/ oil alarm

There is a 2.5-3 oil gallon tank that fills a smaller "kidney" oil tank under the cowling.

The oil level in the Kidney tank dropped low enough to signal the alarm. He need to add oil to the main tank and top off the kidney tank.

This has happen to me this past weekend.

Sorry, can't help you with the "no throttle / limp mode"
I don't believe that model Mariner/Merc has that safety feature.
