Throttle up problem

I have a 1995 Merc 150 with carbs. After starting the motor, and as long as it
is in idle, the motor runs fine. I have to "jog" the throttle 2 or 3 times to get the
motor to run above idle, but then the motor runs fine at slow speed or high speed. If you push the trottle up slowly it sounds as if it backfires and the motor cuts off. Any thoughts?

Re: Throttle up problem

Is it a two stroke? My guess would be that the distributor is not rotating when the throttle is being pushed. Maybe it needs to be lubed through the grease fitting. Again, just a guess. Taek the cowl off, and confirm that the distributor turns when the throttle is advanced, and that the throttle plates open up as the throttle continues to be advanced.
