No water out pee-hole after water pump/impeller check

We're novices but have taken apart lower unit and have checked the water pump and impeller for damage. Everything looks good. Blew air through pee-hole and passage is fine. No water is coming out of pee-hole, water stopped coming out while engine was running. We cut the engine right away but still haven't found the problem. Any ideas on anything else it might be? Mercury 175hp oil-injected outboard. Need expert advice asap--gotta get rid of the tan lines:)

Re: No water out pee-hole after water pump/impeller check

erm, this might be a really daft couple of questions but....

1. Did you take out the impellor and not replace it with a new one ? It just seems a lot of work to do and then refit an old part.

2. More importantly: did you check, double check, triple check that the impellor was refitted the right way round? You may be pumping water out of the engine rather than around it...

3. Did you check the cover plate and pump housing for scoring?

4. Did you definitely connect the feed pipe tightly?

just a thought or two and just the obvious bits.

Do you have a water pressure gauge? It will tell you if it is pumping.

We have not put the lower unit back together yet, but checked the most obvious troubleshooting areas. Doesn't look like any scoring. We didn't take the lower end unit apart until after there was no water coming out. Everyone we talked to figured it was either the impeller or water pump that had gone bad but as I said, they look good. We don't have a water pressure gauge.

If it was me I'd still change the impellor whilst I had it apart: they aren't overly expensive and very expensive problems result if they do stop working.

Just a personal opinion, but I'd now put it back together and see if it works: it may have been a momentary blockage that has cleared.......

We have ordered a water pump kit, figured while we have it apart might as well replace it all. It should be in tomorrow and will put it back together and give it a try. Not to be stupid but what's a KEY? Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll post again when we get it back together and try it. Dry bikinis suck!!! :)

Is the pee hole plugged?

"KEY" = drive pin, installs on flat of shaft to lock impellor in place to drove it, w/out it impellor will not rotate.

The most important part you should be sure to have is the repair manual!

Have you checked the poppet/pressure relief valve? It's on the starboard side of the block below the switchboxes... If it is stuck open because of debri it may dump water out of the block preventing it from reaching the tell-tail...

Just a possibility...

This is worth a look. Some kind of insect likes to make his home up in the water outlet hose of my 25 Merc. He makes a hard crusty nest that clogs up the hose and I have to clean it out with a piece of wire. This happens evey year.

Sorry, I read again and saw that you already checked the passages. My bad.
