Spitting water/exhaust out the back instead of the side

My 1980, Mariner 115 Tower of Power was running quite well, smooth, not stumbling this weekend. Shut it down for about 5-10 minutes fired it back up and it wasn't, sorry, "peeing" out the side. Shut it down and could hear the water run back through the lower unit. Did notice it was spitting water out the back along with exhaust. Not sure if I have a bad seal or if the water pumps shot. Just replaced the water pump last Fall. There were no weeds wrapped around the bottom blocking the intake, so it doesn't seem like it should have been starved for water. A quick fix would be great, but I'm thinking I'm gonna have to pull the lower unit. :(

My 115 does not pee out the cowl for a minute or so after start up.Replaced my w/pump this spring.Try clearing out the pee hole, something may be blocking it.Or put you mouth up to it,and create suction while running it.Does it pee out when throttled up?

It felt like there was a restiction, so stuck a small wire in there. It drips, but not the good steady stream it had earlier in the day. It has about 5 hours on it since the new pump was put in. The pick up hose could have fallen off...I can't believe that pump could be shot already...Doesn't pee when throttled up either.

Sure sounds like the pump impeller has packed it in. Only takes a few minutes to drop the L/U and check. Did you replace the pump insert cup when you did the impeller. If the insert is worn it can chew up a new impeller quickly. I wouldn't run the motor 'till you get it figured out.
