I just purchased a 2001 Tracker Pro Jet w/ the 175xr2 sport jet. s/n of motor is OE385863. The whole unit only had 43 hours. The motor now has 46 hours on it and the oil pump went out. So I am stuck with a hefty repair bill. It appears to have had a plastic gear that drives the pump and it broke. There is no alarm on the oil pump itself. Does any one know if there was a defect with this particular motor or recall? Fishing for help.

Nope. What happened was that the oil pump driven gear rusted and wore the drive gear out. That happens with V-6 mercs that don't get used much. Nothing worse for an outboard than sitting around. :(

If the motor is still OK and all you need is the oil injection there is a mechanical replacement for the gear set up. Saves you from tearing down the motor to replace the gear. If the motor is hurt then it has to come apart anyway.
