Hello all... we have a Mercury 4.5 Horsepower that pushes our Victoria 18 Sailboat along. It is a 'bit too much so were working out an exchange for a 2HP- 2 stroke Honda.

Problem is we just started the engine again after a 2 year period and although it started- at first the cooling water came (albiet not full blast) out of the tell tale it slowly went to a mere trickle. We assumed that there may have been some gunk in the line and it is now lodged so we blew air through it and at first felt some coming out the bottom (screen) then less and less.

Any suggestion on a course of action would be greatly 'preciated in that we have an exhange ready but of course can not work it if our Mercury is not working!?!?!

Lastly... can you tell us what year she may be/ Serical # 5864186... thanks once again for any attention offered. Please e-mail us direct at metineehinee@afes.com

It's a 1981 engine and sounds like the impeller has a set in it from not being run, you will probably have to replace it

Thank you for the information. Can you offer up instructions on replacing the impeller. We're a 'bit mechanically challenged but would give it a try. Are parts readily available? Thank you once again.

Drop the lower unit by removing 2 nuts, 1 by the water pickup on the underneath of the cavitation plate the other is in the front of the lower unit above the plate drop the unit down, remove the 2 nuts on the w/pump top remove the top and the weatr plate and you will see the impeller. What you really need is a manual.

Okay... got the foot off, repalced the impeller and Garkets. We are having trouble with aligning (long and short) back in the housing. Any way of making for a consistent and "done right" insertion and tightening of the foot assembly back to the motor any housing at the top?
