Re: 80W - 90 GL5

Marine-specific gearlubes have additives that hold water in suspension better. Automotive types let the water settle to the bottom more readily which can rust the bearings where they're in contact with raw water. Water in marine gearlube will settle-out as well, it just takes a lot longer. Naturally it's not good if water is getting in there in the first place, but eventually that will become a problem somewhere in the life of the motor.

Yes there is, and other than what is said above, they have more anti foaming additives in them.

Most any Synthetic automotive gear lube will have all the protection you need though. You cant leave it in longer though because you need to be sure that you are not storing your lower unit all winter with "ANY" moisture in there whether it is in suspention or not.

In the higher HP engines, synthetic gear lube will free up just a bit of HP. Sometimes as much as 1-300 RPMs at WOT.

Re: 80W - 90 GL5

I replaced my lower unit oil with marine lube. I wasn't sure if there was a difference and I didn't want to take a chance. Thank you guys for the helpful information.
