have changed impeller ok motor runs well but need help with gears.before assembling bot unit gear shift shaft could be moved both ways but output prop shaft always drove prop in forward dir not wanting to engange n or rev. can you please help solve my problem.Many Thanks in entisipation.u.k. gear shaft on my merc at the bott is only about 4/5 cm with spline

1966, with the lower unit down put it and the shift lever in rev. and reinstall the unit
