I have a 1991 mariner 2.5 200 that has a problem. When I take off there is a banging in my outboard that stops the moment my boat gets up on plane. Here are the details. The motor idles without a problem; I can rev up the motor while in neutral no problem; I can crank it at home with earmuffs, put it in gear no problem; I can move the boat in the water at about 2 miles per hour no problem; but when I go full throttle and the boat attemps to get on plane thats when I can here and feel a banging from my motor. After the boat gets up on plane it runs perfect.

Could be that you have a hub that is trying to spin or the thrust washer is installed wrong. Obviously, the problem is occuring under heave load. I Am Not mechanic, just thinking out loud as to what to look for.

Good idea Gary. I'll order a prop kit and try that. Thanks!

Does the lower unit oil look clean any metal?

If they bump like 2 to 8 times before planing it's usually the shift isn't going into foward far enough. If it's done it a long time, Mr foward gear and clutch aren't going to look too sporty. Try adjusting the shift about 3 turns on the shift adjustment. Turn the barrel so it moves toward the end of the cable. It will go farther into foward. And be sure to check for metal in the oil like mentioned above.

i have the same problem with my 200 hp mariner ['95 model]. i saw where the hose went in, but in order to put back in, will i have to pull the lower unit, and if so, how big a job is that. i think it only has like 3-4 bolts, but do i need to get it to a repair shop to have it done?

Hey BoatWizzard you are a genius! I checked the cable and it was out of alignment. It took about 20 minutes to figure the way that cable worked but I got it. I put in the lake today and she runs perfect. Thanks!
