aftermarket ignition switch

hi I have checked all of the search areas i could find please help. I have a 1970 115hp merc. the ignition switch has quit on me I purchesed a teleflex ignition switch witch has six wires coming out of it red, black, purple, yellow/w/orange tracer, yellow/w/black tracer,black/w/yellow tracer.I have a mercury manual so that i know where the wires on the engine side go to red and black match what should i do to get it going fast its going to be a pretty weekend. help! :confused: it is taped up and sealed and there is no external markings or wiring diagram enclosed. what to do

The Red is most likely be + pos supply to the switch.<br />The Black is usually negative or ground.<br /> I would supply battery power to the red and earth the black.<br /> Then take a multimeter and check each wire whilst you have the key in the 'On' position and find which wire has power supplied to it. <br /><br />Then turn your key to the cranking position and check with wire has power suppied to it this will be your starter solenoid.<br /><br />Then push the key in for choke and see with wire has power this will determine your choke.<br /><br />Then in the key off position see which 2 wires have continuity when the key is off and then test them again when your key is on to make sure there is no continuity, these will be the engine off/kill wires.

I 'tried' an after market swith on a Johnson I used to have. It never worked properly, switched to a factory switch and didnt have any more trouble.

Here's what they do...<br /><br />Red - battery +<br />Black - ground<br />Black/Yellow - kill<br />Yellow/Black - choke<br />Yellow/Red - start<br />Purple - accessory

i tried it that way twidget now it will start but will not run what next :confused: i had to wire the netural saftey lock switch into the yellow/red just to get it to start.

im sorry wilybwright the message that i posted for twidget is for you i was looking at it cross eyed as i said i hooked it up the way you said but it would not start so i wired the netural saftey lock switch into the yellow /red wire now it will start but it will not run. :confused: you may e-mail me or call my e-mail is kbooboo13@aol.com

Hi, Have a look at the 'Mercury' switch on the motor.<br />I had a faulty one and the motor would turn but not run.<br />Disconect it and try
