hahahah could not resist, can we get a bit more information about the motor? HP year seriel numbers.
the trigger in the battery CD system is somewhat different than the ADI system but both basically provide a "trigger" signal to the switchbox so the switchbox can discharge the capacitor through the SCR that just got "triggered" into the ign coil primary windings.

Re: Purpose of motor trigger.

let me start all over. Im having problem with my 115 hp mercury mariner.s#A959255 it idles fine in neutral but when it under load it falls to its face immediatly. tried squeezing the ball but still the same.compression is good. Im sure if its the trigger or the stator. I've rebuild the carb twice but still the same. new plugs & wires, new power pack, coils I don't know what to do pls. help also would like to know the year of the motor. thanks

Re: Purpose of motor trigger.

Have you checked for spark on all cylinders at idle and when you go to get on plane? If you've got fuel and compression then a lack of, weak, or ill timed spark is your problem.

Do the Timing and Sync posted by Clams dtd 18 May 06. I think this will take care of it. I had the same problem which a simple adjustment of the idle screws on the carbs took care of. You can also attach a timing light to each spark plug wire to see if you have good spark to each plug.

Answering your initial question, the trigger is what initates the energy transfer that fires your spark plugs. It's timing with respect to the piston's position in the cylinder (crankshaft relationship) determines if your engine will fire at all and accelerate under load.

Mark
