Hello everyone
I hope some one can help. I have no tell tale stream of water from the engine. Its a 1984 60hp 3 cyl. The impellor is not very old, ive had it apart so many times now trying to fix it. I put a drill on the end of the main shaft and i get a powerful stream of water from the end of the long brass tube, but when i put it all together i get nothing from the little outlet. Ive removed the hose from the engine and all is clear. all i get is some steam from the tell tale outlet. I also am getting some water coming from the two outlets of the exhaust on the back of the engine and a little from around the two bolts and mountings that hold the steering arm to the block. Should i renew the impellor even though it seems to work? Should there be water exiting from the exhaust holes?
Many thanks in advance.

Make sure the impeller is put in with the proper direction as per the manual (clockwise or counterclockwise). If not the impeller blades in the wrong direction often stay in such that way preventing proper priming. also check the primer breather hose if it has one - the tube that lets air out upon initial turns for priming. It could be blocked.

If you are getting water from the two exhaust outlets, you are more than likely experiencing a problem with the poppet valve sticking open. Use the red "Search" button and look up poppet valve.

Welcome to iboats.

I don't think your motor has a poppet, or a thermostat.

When you replaced the water pump impeller, was the old one intact? Sounds like you might have an internal blockage in the internal block passages somewhere.

Your water pump test is a good one. Let's rule the impeller out as the problem, for now.

Are you certain that the upper end of the water tube is inserted into the proper spot? The fact that you have water squirting out the steering bracket is concerning. I'm curious if your whole midsection isnt just filling up with water, rather than circulating through the powerhead. Double check that the upper end of the water tube is sealed off good and tight. It normally doesn't come out of the midsection when you have the lower unit off. The fact that you tested it with a drill, sounds like you had the water tube connected to the lower unit, on the bench?

Take the telltale tubing off and blow through it to make sure it is clear.

Good luck.

Thanks AMD. didnt realize the tube should stay attached to the mid section. I will remove it all again today and insert the tube into the powerhead first then attach the lower end. Should i insert the tube then put a hose to the pipe just to see if the water circulates ok? Should the water come out of the exhaust ports?
Will let you know the results.

Many thanks

Thanks everyone all sorted now.
Did what AMD suggested. Took the copper pipe off the pump and inserted it into the mid section first. Put a hosepipe on the pipe and checked that water was then coming out of the pee hole. Put it all back together and now all is great.
Many thanks again

Glad it worked for you.

Don't be surprised to see some water coming out of the upper exhaust ports. They typically 'spit' water out.
