My early 70's 9.8 HP had a water circulation problem - no water from peep hole near cowling - and it turned out to be the rubber linkage hose between the copper tube and the impeller outlet. Put in a new hose, all fine, water out the peep and all. Ran fine for 3 hours trolling, then squeaked for 1-2 seconds and seized up. I am meticulous on oil/fuel mix (50:1, using 3 oz per gallon to be sure). Any ideas? Can the lower unit freeze up and cause a similar condition? Searching for what to do first?

You need to pull the lower unit down to see if the pinion brg is out or if's a main brg.

Should the lower unit shaft be "turnable" by hand? How about with a pair of soft tooth pliers? It's very hard to turn at all. Any opinions?

With the LU off, you should have mostly just the tension of the water pump impeller to work against, and if you have removed the impeller it should turn freely. Don't turn the drive shaft backwards with the impeller in. If the impeller is new it can cause a good bit of resistance. You may try putting it in gear and turning the prop shaft with the prop, just be sure to turn it the right way unless you have removed the impeller first..

Thank You Bill! This is a great advice website. I will heed your directions and try to turn the shaft in the right direction later tonight. Much appreciated!

OK, sorry it took so long to return..was out of town for some time now. Seprarted lower unit from engine, motor rope now pulls easy. Problem is definitely in the lower unit. Can't turn the shaft at all by hand, not even with a pair of pliers on the shaft...didn't hold it down too hard. Need to disasssemble the lower unit, except there is no obvious way to do that. Any help would be appreciated. The case is not a split type, so it does not separate. Torch required? Help.
