gas spewing out of screw on top carb

Hello, I have a '78 merc. 900. Inline 6. It has been running fine, and idling fine, it fired up and died. then it wouldn't fire any more. I took the cover off, and when I would turn it over, gas would shoot out of the top carb. through a little brass screw with a hole in it on the left side of the carb. (when looking at engine from inside the boat) <br /><br />What would cause this? Also, where can I get a new little brass screw? I was taking it out to check it, and it fell into the great abyis of the bottom shroud. <br /><br />Thanks,<br />Nate.

Nate, That brass screw is actually the "backdrag" jet in the carb cover. Leaving it out will not cause an issue.<br /><br />You need to fix the float in that carb, so the fuel level is correct. I would tap on the carb bowl with the handle of a screwdiver to loosen up a stick float. If that fails, you will need to remove the float bowl cover (2-5/16" cap screws), and replace some combination of the float, needle valve, seat and gasket. If you have the original foam floats on that motor, they tend to deteriate, and are replaced with hard plastic floats.

Thanks, It wasn't actually the float that was stuck, but very close. There was a small speck of dirt or something in the cap over the float, and it got the needle stuck so It wouldn't drop back down.
