Would the polyester resin adhere well enough? Would it chip off easily? I spray painted a piece of grp console with enamel paint from a can but later decided I want to pour some clear gelcoat over it. Would this work out ok?

I wouldn't use poly resin over any finished surface that hasn't been at least sanded to 80 grit. 40 grit sanding would be better. ;)

Ok, so Polyester resin really needs some massive grip to adhere? Other than that is it ok?

It won't stand up to sunshine (UV rays) at all unless it's opaquely coated. It will darken and disintegrate. Sam

I was hoping to spray paint over the polyester resin. Its just the gelcoat that I initially sprayed enamel was cracked up and I didn't realize until after it was painted. So I want to smooth the surface out with a "gelcoat" of polyester resin with surfacing agent and then re-hit it with enamel spray paint. Would that be ok?

Great! Thanks guys. I would hate to have to use paint stripper to remove the old enamel thats all.

I'm going to sand it good with 80 or 40 grit (depending what I got) for bite. This should be fun :)

Gel coat doesn't go on very smooth by itself. The gelcoat on your counsel is smooth because it came out of a mold. If you brush or roll it on , it will have "character". Sam

Hi Samsam,

I was going to pour it on and let it roll off on its own. I have UV activated catalyst so I can collect the run off. I'm going to be employing a surfboard laminating technique. I'm actually using surfboard resin which is highly strained and clear as water. Also since its uv activated I can let it settle for quite awhile before putting it into the sun to cure.

I have some doubts that you will like the result. Make sure you try a small out of the way area first.
