We have a 1983 Suzuki DT140 with four cylinders. We took it out on the water Saturday and it idled just fine, but only when we sprayed starting fluid in the carbs. But when we shifted it into gear, it would go only between 10-15 miles per hour while holding down the front lever down that was connected to the carbs. But when we idled, it would revv up to high rpms. Also, some of the Carbs on it were very cold, and a couple were warm. We added oil to the gas and the oil reservoir to see if the oil pump was working, because the motor was sitting up for a couple of years. Do you think that the oil just fouled up the plugs? Or what? Any suggestions?

Re: Suzuki DT140, Loss of Power

If if has sat up for a couple of years, then I would suggest some preventative repair and maint be done before your next outing.
1. Carb Rebuild. You coudl have some floats sticking and needle valves that are not seating properly, along with clogged jets.
2. Fuel Pump Rebuild.
3. New Spark plugs. (Can never hurt)
4. Change Lower Unit oil.
5. Water pump rebuild & impeller replacement.

(Anything I messed guys???)

Start with these few repair items (and any other than are suggested) and see if you get better performance next time out. These items are simple for someone that is a bit of a handy guy and somewhat mechanically inclined.
Good luck and update us. If you need any advise on how to do any of this, be sure to come back here. (By the way, get a manual the that engine if you haven't already.)
Knightgang
