TO my knowledge, all outboards are rated at the prop since 1987(A requirement of BIA certification). I was talking to a few friends of mine who own forces and they said that Force was the only outboard that continued to rate their horsepower at the crankshaft even after 1987 and up until their end in 1999, not the prop like all other manufactures. Is this true? Hmmm...no wonder why my friends 120 force is a dog..

The requirement was 1985, I believe...
The Force just didn't develope the power at 5250 as a max RPM with the small props they ran..Crysler/Force has always been 10yrs behind in technology until Brunswick bought them and started making changes (Merc).

thx walleye...i thought it was 1987...oh well. I also know that force was always behind in technology but i just wanted to know if their engines had always been rated at the crank even after the mandate.

The federal statute went into effect in 1987 on 1988 model year production. It was universally applied to all brands.

I wouldn't call it a Statute. It was a BIA Guideline that a manufacturer could either adopt or not. BIA ceertification is not a production requirement. Chrysler/Force never did adopt it and they never sent the BIA Boat cops to arrest them. ;)

how do ya figgue they lacked on technology?
on a mid 80's to end production run what was so lacking in the technology? all I ever worked on were about as advanced as most the other makes low end models.
they had ADI electrinic ign, carbs, pulse fuel pumps, recirc system, reed valves and needle on the crank and wristpins and used cracked rod caps about like 90% of the rest of the worlds production.
the technology baffles me.

so is it correct to say that force did not rate their engine h.p from the prop even after this BIA guideline? If this is true then would a force 120 really be like a 1987 or later model mercury 100?

As per some observations I tend to beleve OMC were right on ... Mercury were overrated ... and Force underrated.

Meaning

OMC 15 = 15 hp
Merc 15 = 16 hp
Force 15 = 14 hp

I suppose it would be pro-rata for bigger engines but then it also depends on the years. My comparisons date back to the 70's and 80's I think things changed by the 90's and up.

Cheers
