I have a 2001 Yamaha 50hp. Ever since the day I bought this motor it has been extremely hard to start. As a matter of fact it will not start unless I open the cowl and turn on the emergency fuel enrichment. This can be after sitting up for a day or a week doesn't matter. I have had it in the shop 3 times now with no result. I bought this motor brand new and it has been nothing but problems from day one. Any tip or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a 2- or 4-stroke?

Do you pump the fuel bulb till its hard, and then use the choke until it fires?

It is a 2 stroke. I always pump the bulb and I even replaced it last year to make sure it was good. My model does not have a choke. It is a prime start model witch I truely hate.

Re: trouble starting yamaha 50hp

I would suggest trying a squeeze bottle with gas. Do not use starting fluid as it will damage the aluminum. Take a small plastic bottle or spray bottle, give the carbs a shot just before you try to start. If it kicks over, then dies, you have a fuel delivery problem. If it stays running, it would be a fuel pressure problem. Try disconnecting the feeder hose at the pump. Pump the buld to see if you are getting a good flow. If you are, then it could be the trash filter on the pump, or a bad pump. I would also suggest a carb cleaning, including a fuel line cleaning all the way back to your bulb.I hope the shop did not charge you for failing to make the repairs in the past. ;)

madbee, after you pump the bulb up firm are you cranking with the warm-up lever down? Ever tried: pump up bulb, raise and lower warm-up lever 3 times, then crank (with lever back down)?

When it does eventually start how does it run? Real smooth right away or rough gradually to smooth or rough for a while and then jumps to smooth?

What did the 3 trips to shop do for you? What did they find and how did it work after that?

PrimeStart=PleaseStart, imo.

Re: trouble starting yamaha 50hp

hey thanks for all the ideas. I hope they work. Also, once I get the motor started it will run very rough (I have to keep playing with the fast idle to keep it running)but after I get going down the lake it runs like a champ at wot. Thanks again for the help and keep the tips coming.

Sometimes the pump diaphragm gets stretched and won't work the enrichener correctly. Yamaha also had some problems with the wax element inside the heater housing on top of the enrichener. Sometimes removing it and cleaning out the passageways, checking if the needle sticks, and even putting it in the freezer overnite helps for some reason. A Yamaha rep mentioned that years ago, and in some cases it make the system operational again.

madbee,

Try this starting procedure.

1. Make sure the primer bulb is pumped up.

2. Lift warm up lever to about 1/4 of its total travel.

3. Turn the key to on position (NOT START) and push it in. Count to eight with the key held in.

4. Release the key.

5. Turn the key to start.

6. "Bump" key in if engine wants to die. This will inject fuel beind the carbs into the intake.

Good luck.

DJ,

That starting procedure is fine for a fuel fed primer system, but the Yamaha Prime Start will not work with the throttle opened, and is does not use a key switch activated solenoid primer.

hello
dude ya gotta find a shop that understands how the fuel enrichment circuit works. if you raise the warmup lever it will NOT start or will be incredably had to start. its a simple system but did have some failures. next time your at the dealer ask to see the technicians certificate of completion of yamaha fuel systems school. I got mine and display it.
if he cant or wont show it find a dealer that will.
good luck and keep posting
