I rebuilt my 130 two months ago and it runs great. My friend has a 115 four stroke and wants to trade me. I do not care about the speed difference. I have had many two strokes over the past 10 years. Probably 15 outboards but never a 4 stroke. Should I trade him. The four stroke runs good. Should I keep my 130. He has a boat and wants more speed than the F115.

If you just have to try a 4 stroke then trade. Otherwise your 130 is rebuilt, more hp, simple and the boat is already setup with it.

Hi bonitoman,

The "economic" part of a such trade only You can judge if it is reasonable.

Is it a "Yamaha" 130 2-stroke you have?
Year?

Yamaha F115 4-stroke - year? Hours on the guage?

You will obviously loose some force and speed but since You say speed is less important to You I see no reason really to not try this trade with Your friends F115 4-stroke, based on the info You have given so far, but read below.

Tell us what boat (model) You have and how many persons usually in the boat.

I have a Yamaha F115 4-stroke (2003) myself and I really like it. I had a Suzuki 2-stroke before.
What I like is the easy starting (because if EFI), no smoke at startup, no smell of gas at startup or while running (even in tailwind) and it is rather quiet at cruise RPM (around 4000 RPM). At idle You can not hear it. At full speed it is reasonably quiet (but not as quiet as I had expected to be honest).
As for force the Yamaha F115 4-stroke and Suzuki DF 115 4-stroke is very similar just to compare with another brand. You will probably have to use higher RPM with a Yamaha F115 compared to your Yamaha 130 2-stroke at cruise speed. So I'm not sure the sound level and fuel consumption will be so much lower than You already experience.
You get digital guages with the Yamaha F115 4-stroke, I assume You know that.

Personally I would probably be very tempted to make that trade You have been offred if the Yamaha F115 4-stroke has been serviced regularly and do not have very high hours on it. You get a steel prop also as standard with the F115. You will be more dependent on marine mechanics to service the F115 since it is more complicated engine (drive belt, EFI etc etc). You can probably change impeller, oil, filers and such Yourselv but the electronics is better to leave to the professionals.

So far I have nothing real negative to say about my Yamaha F115 4-stroke. It is fuel efficent for sure, reasonably quiet, and have good force. Not that heavy (402 lbs). On my boat it reach about 40 knots and that is rather fast in my eyes. For trolling it is good with 4-stroke as You probably know (if You are going to do that).

The Yamaha F115 4-stroke first came out on the market in october 1999 so it has been on the market for many years and is proven to be a reliable outboard. For 2004 it was made CARB 3-star rated (only 2-star rated before). I do not know what has been enhanced over the years since it came out (only thing I know is the "decals" was changed to 2002 season, but that is all I know, new to the right below).
