I have a 90 Yamaha 115 on a Welcraft Center Console. I need to replace the steering cable. Due to clearance problems I think I need to remove the entire engine from the boat to remove the old steering cable/ram and install the new one. Aside from the lifting/supporting the engine this seems like a fairly straight forwarwd nuts and bolt operation. If anyone who has done this before would offer any advice they feel would be helpful I would appreciate any and all suggestions. I am especially interested in any ideas on the best way to hoist/lift the engine from the transom; overhead support, block and tackle, etc. Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Removing engine from boat

I just re and re'd a 115. My 115 yamaha 2003 had a hook under some plastic piece on the top of the motor, I was fortunate enough to have a neighbor with a forklift so he hoisted it for me with ease to install the new motor. The old motor me and 2 friends lifted off without a problem and set it down, however putting it back on is difficult as its awkard to hold. If your motor has a hook on top I would recommend using an engine hoist that car guys use to pick motor out, hook that up to the top of the motor and you will be fine.

Yeah, go with the car engine hoist method. You can rent them at any rental house.

Or, if there is a serious tree branch overhead, you can use that and a come-along. That works too.

Or, you can unbolt the engine and gently tilt the front trailer up so that the engine is resting on its skeg. I have never done this, but have been told it is doable.

Your engine weights about 350 lbs., so be careful.

The cherry picker is ideal. Have help around when you go to put it back. Much easier to get lined back up with an extra hand.

Thanks for the advice. The rental engine hoist; sometimes I wonder where the hell my head is! Again, Thanks.
