4-stroke squeel

I have a 2002 225HP 4-stroke Yamaha outboard. During idle, I notice a squeak/squeel from the engine. The noise doesn't seem to be rythmic but doesn't happen all the time, but more often than not. The best I can describe the sound is like a loose fan belt on a car engine (like a loose power steering belt). I just bought this boat, so I don't know if this is normal or a sign of impending disaster. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Joseph

there may be a tech bulliten on that motor. you need to take it to a dealer and have them run the seriel #. there is a modification on the 25" motors for the driveshaft bushing. the bushing is only used on the 25" motor. other than that there has been the very rare tensioner failure and we occasionally just find a belt that squeaks.
good luck and keep posting

good luck and keep posting

How can a regular consumer keep up with service bulletins for their engine (in my case a Johnzuki)without going in to the dealer?

Re: 4-stroke squeel

hopefully you take it in for regular service and your tech actually gets to see the bullitens. one of the marina's I contract for requires all techs to initial all bullitens so we have to read them. should be that way everywhre. to answer your question though I really dont know how unless you go in and ask occasionally.
good luck and keep posting

Re: 4-stroke squeel

Thanks for all the responses. This engine has very few hours (about 100). I haven't removed anything to look at the timing belt, the previous owner told me it was still under warranty. Which brings up my next question...
Can anyone recommend a good Yamaha Service Center/mechanic in the Richmond, VA area? If not the Richmond area, anywhere nearby (i.e. Norfolk area)? I've been taken in the past and I don't want just anyone to mess with this engine.
Thanks again.
Joseph

Timing belts do not squeak. They would have to slip to do that. They are Gilmer (toothed) belts. do NOT attempt to reset belt tension without a manual.

You have a dry bearing or unintended contact between parts.

My guess is the driveshaft bushing.

chances are your gearbox hasnt been removed for servic in a while. have it serviced and lube the driveshaft bushing at the same time. 100 hours or not 3 years is too long for a gearbox re/re.

BenC what do ya mean? its a 4 stroke and never breaks, just like a car. and its only got 50 hours since new.
I have a cust with a 98 grady and a 225 that I expect will blow this year. its only got like 32 hours on the clock but its never been serviced other than fuel stabilizer and such. I tried to tell him but his bro-inlaw overides me. so ill sit back and wait for that paycheck as well.
he may have burned 60 gallons of gas out of 240 gallons in the past 2 years.

BenC/Rodbolt, What gearbox are you talking about? I have a 2003 f225 yammi with about 80hrs. on it. It's been used for 1 season. Is this something I can check on myself? Is there anything else I should check on before I get her ready for the up coming season? I still need to get the recall done (throttles). Thanx in advance.

I have a F-150 four Stroke 2004. It squeaked at low rpms. It was the bushing, they had to replace, under warranty. That stopped the squeak.
