Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

Recently purchased a boat with a 98 200hp. When I got it home, I noticed the plug for the oil tank sensor and pump was unplugged. Oil alarm went off when I connected it. What does the c clip on the rod of the tank sensor do???

More info... Pump runs when I connect 12V to it and wires that power pump also show 12V. This is the thing I don't understand. When I connect the wires that power the motor, I get 0 volts. Again.. with the wires unplugged from the tank I get 12V.

How does this system work? Does the oil tank in the boat control when the pump kicks on. Or does the oil tank in the boat communicate with the tank mounted on the motor. Thanks for any help or insight.

Re: Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

helo
I am going to assume this is a yamaha as a suzuki has a single tank.
the newer yamaha system uses a microprocessor incorperated in the CDI unit. the float in the engine tank controls remote pump ON and remote pump OFF as well as low oil alarm. the remote tank pump is turned on by grounding the blue wire. the brown wire is always hot. someplace on this site is a trouble shooting chart. if you cant find it repost and I may have time to step you through it. the c-clip holds the float and keeps it from falling off. on the end of the screen is a rubber seal. that seal should be changed anytime the screen is removed. also pay attention to how the float assy is put in the screen. if done improperly you may have a no pump off condition and cause the tank to overflow.
good luck and keep posting.

Re: Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

Please post the trouble shooting link if possible. When I was messing with the remote tank sensor... the pump turned on for a few seconds. This is why I thought there was communication between the 2 oil tank sensors.

Like I stated before. When I 1st connected the plug for the remote oil tank, the alarm buzzed continuously.. The float on that sensor is held almost at the very bottom of the rod with a plastic c clip. When I removed the c clip the float was allowed to travel further up the rod (to whatever level the oil was at in the remote tank) an thus eliminated the alarm.

I just don't know what to replace at this point. I have tried to get the pump to fire by removing oil from the engine oil tank. I have also tried to move the float on the engine tank to different positions, but the pump never fires.

How often do these sensors go bad? Where's the cheapest place to buy them?

Thanks for the help..

hello
I am thinking somebody placed the clip and float in the wrong spot. what tach indicators do you have? does it have lights or bars for the visual indicators? the system is almost self trouble shooting. does the trim indicator work?
good luck and keep posting

Re: Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

Thanks rodbolt for your replies. Ok the gauges are Faria. Only two.. A speedo and tach. No lights. Can I purchase gauges that will have visual indicators?

Ok got home and started ohm'ing out the sensors on both oil tanks. Motor tank sensor seems fine and ohms out in the positions it should.

Ok... How do I know if the remote tank sensor is bad? The float like I said is trapped between the end of the rod and where the c clip is. This doesn't allow much slide room and the alarm will continually buzz. Alarm sounds when float is almost at the bottom of the rod. If I move the float all of the way to the bottom, switch is open. Lift it up a hair from the bottom and it sounds again. Is this normal?

Ok.. Where is the trim sensor located and how can I tell if it's bad? 98 Yamaha V200TLRW Thanks for all of your help. I hope it's not the CDI. I hear these rarely go bad.

Re: Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

hello
the engine tank sensor contains a set of reed switchs. sw1,sw2 and sw3. upper position(sw1) is pump off test bleu/white to black , sw2 is pump on test blue/green to black, sw3 is warning lamp/alarm. test blue/red to black. all circuits should show continuity when the float is at the proper position.the remote tank only controls the yellow lamp to indicate the remote tank is low. if the switch fails or the tank is low no oil transfer will occur. not much sense in turning on the pump if there is no oil.the remote tank switch should have continuity withthe float up and open with the float down. remember all yamaha circuits use a ground path for control. ditch the cheapo faria junk and buy the proper digital stuff that was designed to work with your motor. will it transfer when you toggle the gray emergency switch on the ECU?
good luck and keep posting

Yes... pump runs with grey toggle switch.

Where should the float be on the remote tank sensor?

Could the trim sensor be my problem??

Thanks!

Re: Faulty Oil Tank Sensor ???

Rodbolt... I actually have the pump working but please read on... This thing is driving me nuts. The engine tank sensor ohms out at all three positions just fine.

The remote tank sensor ohms out at the up position and breaks connection at the most bottom position just as you said it should.

Everything seems to be working fine but the alarm goes beeeeeeeeeeppppppp the whole time!

Here's what I did today.....
With remote tank float in up postion and completing the circuit... I then slowly lifted the engine sensor out of the reservoir and voila... the pump fired and filled the engine tank up to the top line and then shut off. So everything appears to be working except the alarm sounds the whole damn time. What's going on with this? Is the wiring messed up? Is the CDI screwed up? Please help...
