You will have to pull the powerhead to relace the shift shaft. It won't go back in with it mounted.

Re: shift rod 200 yammy broken

THANKS FOR THE INFO, JUST FINISHED TAKING CARBS OFF AND OLDSHIFT ROD PIECE CAME OUT, WILL POST RESULTS OF REPLACING NEW SHAFT...MOTOR IS IN GEAR AND DONT KNOW WHETHER IN FORWARD OR REVERSE. CONTROLS IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION, SHOULD I PUT NEW SHIFT ROD ON LOWER UNIT CONNECTION WHILE OFF AND PUT IT IN NEUTRAL WHERE PROP IS SPINNING?

You might have pulled that shift rod out because it is broken but in order for you to install a new stainless shift rod that powerhead must be pulled. You can not bend that shift rod when installing the new one. The biggest problem you will have is that adapter plate when a powerhead bolt snaps off if used in salt water. Good Luck It can be done in 2-4 hours if there are no complications with powerhead bolts.

Re: shift rod 200 yammy broken

shift rod for 1990 yamaha 200 is cold steel, and will go in if carbs and intake are taken off and seems like it probably saved alot of time monkeying around with broken bolts, if the powerhead was removed. I guess the older motors must be a little different set up. It was not a dead straight shot, but with the lower unit off it went through and then, with controls in neutral and prop spinning freely the lower unit went back on and is shifting fine. Is stainless steel rod thicker or just has no bend at all? This job i have researched could be really expensive if taken to a shop, but it only took about three hours total and no heating and boring out broken bolts. Thanks for the feedback this is areally good forum to learn about motors and troble shooting

artis
Was this a new cold steel shift shaft that you installed? Do you have a part number for it?

Canuck 16.

Re: shift rod 200 yammy broken

Canuck16, I replaced the shift rod on my 1985 200hp yamaha 4 years ago with the steel (painted )shift shaft. It was a nightmare due to broken bolts. Wish I knew then that I could have done it by removing the carbs. Anyhow, I found the receipt and the part number is 6454412023 and at that time cost $64.93 . Good luck....
Artis, I just saw a tip on tv on removing and installing lower units this past weekend . They said to put your engine in reverse before removing the lower unit. Reason being that when you go to reinstall the lower unit, if the driveshaft and crankshaft splines don't line up all you have to do is turn the prop counter clockwise to line them up. It worked well when they did it.(I'll see this weekend when I reinstall mine)

Re: shift rod 200 yammy broken

caldemaxi
I do 5 to 10 pumps a week on v yamahas and leave them in nutral. its easier.
the splines on the yamaha are fine enough that with lightly rotating the lower about the time the shhift shafts touch will do it. sometimes you have to use a finger on the shift shaft just above the exhaust housing(where the speedo tube dissconnect is) to position the shift shaft. I saw a job like this once and the shaft got bent slightly. two weeks or so later the shift rod seal failed due to the bent shift side loading it. caused a lower unit failure. but if it works in this case its all the better.

I too can't imgine how you got that shaft in without bending it. I hope it works out for you but have also seen the same results as rodbolt when someone showed me they could do it without pulling the powerhead. Good Luck.
