Hi,

I have a Yamaha 8hp fitted to my Swift 18 Sailboat.

I have recently fitted new instruments and autopilot/GPS to the boat all running of a car battery.

I don't have an onboard battery charger, so I have to remove and take the battery home to charge it.

Mariner have a Saildrive outboard which has an output to be used for battery charging.

Is it possible to modify my Yamaha 8hp so that I can use it to charge my battery?

Looking forward to your replies and ideas.

Nigel

Re: Yamaha 8hp

Nigel

As far as I know you can put an alternator on this engine. They made it in electric start (even if you don't have it). Their is another way to do it with a rectifier? I think, but that output would be lower.

if you have a dealer nearby, just call them. It will be several hundred dollars but worth it on a sail boat. These engines idle well enough to run at anchor and power your boat - put on a small inverter and you can make coffee, and run your laptop, etc.

Gary

Have you thought of using a solar panel? Power free from the sun 365 days a year.

the power output from that system below about 3500RPM is marginal and about 4 amps or so at 5000. for anything other than long runs it really wont charge a battery much less power an inverter long.

Nigel

You do need a good deep cycle battery, my 9.9 keeps it charged very well, and I don't run the inverter for more than about 20 minutes.

It keep my 12 volt lights running for almost a whole day.

Ps: thanks Rodbolt for explaing why I have
cooked" two batteries running the inverter for a couple of hours during the parage of lights, enginle is almost at idle the whole time.

Gary

The solar panel is still my best advice. I see sail boats with them on everywhere.
