To make a long story short, I was starting to get what looked to be leakage on my head gaskets on the two lower cylinders on my 93 225. Upon trying to remove the heads for inspection I broke several (5) head bolts off in the process. I have them out, have ran chasers through the bolt holes to clean everything out, ordered all new head bolts, gaskets, and thermostats.. My question(s) are:

1)What do I need to use on the gaskets, any type of rtv or??
2)What about the bolts, do I use locktite or something more like never seize?

Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Fred

hello
use perfect seal from a merc dealer or gasket maker from a BRP dealer. both are a paint on sealant that works well. DO NOT USE SILLY CONE.
on the head bolts I use either perfect seal or PST. (pipe sealeant with teflon.)
welcome to iboats and lets all have fun :)
dont use silicone anywhere on that motor.

Robolt,
Thanks for the information I really do appreciate it, I'll pick some up. Hope you don’t mind some additional questions, I wand to be sure I do this right the first time..

(1)I was cleaning the heads up last night and noticed (on one of them) on the very bottom, in between two bottom bolts where the water journal that flow around the top of the head and the cavity is corroded to the point it’s not as thick and not as “true” of a surface as the rest of the head. The corrosion is actually not on the water journal side but the side of the cavity between the two head bolts. A friend was over while I was working on this and he suggested marine tex to build it back up if I wanted to, as it looked to be on a side that is just an empty void. ???
(2)I removed the inner exhaust cover so that I could inspect the rings, etc.. All looks good, pistons, cylinder walls and rings. I do have some minor corrosion on the inner exhaust cover along with carbon build up. The corrosion was on the same side that I thought was breached.. (Although I never lost compression, it was the gaskets that looked suspicious to me.) Should I just clean it up and put it back in, or do I replace it?

Thanks in advance!

Fred
