1990 yamaha 225 low oil alarm

The LCD oil indcator alarm intermitantly goes off when in gear. When i take it out of gear it stops, then when i run it slowly it is ok until i accelerate then it goes on again. The oil reservoir is full, and it appears to be emptying on a regular basis. Runs rough immediately after alarm goes off, but if i let it lay for an hour or run it at low rpms it is<br /> fine.

check the oil filter in the remote tank.

I TOOK YOUR ADVICE ON CHECKING THE OIL FILTER, BUT I WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY TYPE OF FILTER BETWEEN THE EXTERNAL OIL TANK AND THE MOTOR. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?
